Badass Band #9- The Ferocious Few
If you look up ferocious in the dictionary you will find the following definition: savagely fierce, cruel or violent. When I first saw The Ferocious Few on stage at The Roxy back in February I thought to myself, “What a perfect name. It describes them INSANELY well.” There is no describing the experience of seeing them live, seriously. I have NEVER, NEVER, NEVER seen anyone play an acoustic electric guitar with the ferocity that Francisco Fernandez does. My jaw was on the floor within seconds and I could not tear my eyes off of his hands. It was one of those concert experiences where you know instantly this band was going to be one of your favorites for a long time to come.
When I first saw them, The Ferocious Few was made up of two members, Francisco Fernandez and Daniel Aguilar. Since then, Francisco has been carrying on the FF generally as a solo effort. The last time I saw him perform was in April and he was training up a new drummer. Anyway, FF is a San Francisco based band who unlike so many others, legitimately got their start playing on the street corners of the city by the bay. They soon gained an intense following, and started to announce where (as in what cross streets) their fans could catch them that day. When I heard this it gained them even more credit with me because we all know making it on a street corner is a rough business. We have all walked by street performers and either didn’t bother to listen or just dismissed them as vagabonds. Clearly, this band was/is talented enough to cast their musical spell on people to make them long time fans.
Their album, Juices, was released in 2010 and is pretty much one of the most rockin’ albums I own. Francisco’s voice is reminiscent of something like a rough Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley. When he sings, he makes you really believe the words that are coming out of his mouth. I can’t even pick what songs I should suggest to you because they are all fan-fucking-tastic. I guess if I had to pick my top 2 they would be ‘Porcelain Doll’ and ‘Gasoline and Cocaine’ . So look ‘em up, and listen, they will rock your life!
